Our carefully chosen equipment is designed to support the body in ways that ensure maximum effectiveness — from core strengthening to posture improvement and muscle lengthening.

Our Pilates Philosophy

Movement is essential for optimal physical and emotional health.

Joseph Pilates said, “Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty not only to attain it but to maintain it.”

Angel lives this wellness philosophy and believes that the path to health should be enjoyable and empowering. She will create a personal exercise program that becomes the highlight of your day. You’ll find our space filled with natural light, fresh ocean air, and a peaceful environment designed to relax both the mind and body.

Your workout program will reflect your scheduling needs and personal goals — enhancing strength, posture, flexibility, and overall well-being.

Mat Work

The mat work is the original movement system Joseph Pilates created and is just as effective as work on the equipment — and can be done anytime, anywhere.

Joseph Pilates stated:
“Physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”

The Pilates Method is a system of exercises that build strength while lengthening the muscles. Movements are low-impact and joint-friendly, focusing on:

  • Relaxation

  • Concentration

  • Coordination

  • Centering

  • Alignment

  • Breathing

  • Stamina

  • Flowing movement

When practiced consistently, Pilates supports a uniformly developed body by activating smaller stabilizing muscles and improving overall balance and alignment.

Benefits include:

  • Increased lung capacity

  • Strength & flexibility (especially abdominals and back)

  • Muscular & mental coordination

  • Improved posture, balance, bone density, and joint health

  • Enhanced overall health & well-being

Who’s Teaching?

Angel Maffei

Angel is a lifelong fitness enthusiast with a background in martial arts, kickboxing, cycling, aerobics, yoga, and more.

She moved to Southern California in 1990 where she became certified as a personal trainer and spinning instructor, all while pursuing her education in Spanish both abroad and in California. She later worked as a medical office manager in Marina Del Rey, during which she was introduced to holistic wellness practices including Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, massage, Ayurveda, and meditation.

Angel fell in love with Pilates after taking private lessons — it quickly became her passion, combining physical challenge with mindful movement.

She received her classical certification from The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado in 2001 and is a PMA-certified instructor. Angel continues her education through advanced trainings and her longtime yoga practice.

She opened The Center… by the sea in 2008 and has operated PilatesAngel in Hermosa Beach for more than 12 years. In 2020, she also became an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach through The Institute of Integrative Nutrition.

Her mission is to help clients connect more deeply with their bodies and experience improved balance, strength, and overall well-being.

Words of Wisdom

“If at age 30 you are stiff and out of shape, then you are old.
If at 60 you are supple and strong, then you are young.”
